Where did the inspiration for Mompreneur Ink come from?

I’ve been a small business owner since 1998. I’ve had really successful ventures and some very unsuccessful business experiences over the years. One of my not-so-successful ventures left me humiliated and penniless. I was also pregnant with my first child (unexpectedly), which added another level of stress to an already dire situation. I spent over a year hiding in my house having a pity party with a side of depression.

Years ago, someone gave me a book by Dr. Wayne Dyer called “Wishes Fulfilled.” It sat on my bookshelf unopened until I got put on bed rest for a while and opened it out of boredom. Once I got into it, I felt like God himself had put that book in my hand. The words literally changed my life. I read three more Dyer books and added several other authors of the same school of thought to my repertoire. I watch the movie, “The Secret,” and I became a believer in the Law of Attraction. Being a Christian first, I cross-referenced those books with the Bible as Dyer mentioned and I knew Jesus was speaking to me through those pages. I felt reinvigorated and revitalized. I talked myself out of the depression and I brought back my writing business.

One of the most important tasks I did when I re-opened my business was be honest with myself about what went wrong in the last venture. First problem – ego. I was so focused on being a “business owner” and the prestige I thought it brought, I lost my “why.” As my business grew, I worked for the money, power and respect I THOUGHT it brought me. Boy, was I wrong. The second biggest issue – lack of a business mentor. I had people who “advised” me, but no one who was walking alongside me helping me make important decisions or warning me of potential bumps in the road. Yes, I’d owned a business before, but I was still quite young, and even the most experienced business owners need a coach sometimes.

So that’s what inspired me… Now I’ve made it my goal to provide Mompreneurs with EVERYTHING they need to operate a successful, sustainable small or home-based business in one community.

Please provide one business tip that you feel can really help a mom entrepreneur with her business.

Get. A. COACH. Work with someone who understands you as a person and how you and your small business interact for your success. It doesn’t have to be an expensive business coach. But my advice to EVERY Mompreneur is to get a business coach to look at your business and help you along the way.

1 thing you do for yourself to unwind from it all?

I spend the first moment of alone time in the evenings in a quiet place with a good glass of wine.
