What does a plastics process worker do?
A plastics process worker manages machines that make plastic products. They will spend the majority of their day at a production line. The good news is that it’s not a solitary job. That’s because there are usually teams of plastics process operatives that work together.
Their job is to make sure the products made from injection molding machines are correct. Any mistakes will slow down the production line. It’s their job to make sure issues get resolved as quickly as possible.
Plastics process workers get to work with all kinds of manufacturing equipment. For the most part, they will spend their time using injection molding machines.
They get to see first hand how all kinds of products get made. From boxes to smartphone cases, they make them all. Some of the duties that a plastics process worker undertakes can include:
- Weighing and mixing raw materials;
- Starting and shutting down injection molding machines;
- Making adjustments to machine controls;
- Performing cleaning and maintenance tasks on each machine.
Part of their job also includes “flashing”. This is where they trim any excess pieces of plastic from the products that get made.
What training does a plastics process worker need?
It’s a job where a plethora of skills and qualifications are not needed. That means almost everyone has the opportunity to become a plastics process worker.
Some skills are more likely to get you the job if you apply for such a role. Examples include good math and teamworking skills. Decoupled molding training is also favorable for candidates.
As one gains on-the-job experience, they will soon rise through the ranks. They can then work their way up to a supervisory or managerial level.
What hours does a plastics process worker do?
The beauty of such a role is you only have to work standard office hours – i.e. 9-5, Monday to Friday. Of course, some companies may offer overtime if there are tight manufacturing deadlines. But, for the most part, one can enjoy having time free on their evenings and weekends.
As you’d be working in a factory environment, you wouldn’t need to wear a suit to work. Rather, you’ll get asked to wear overalls to protect your clothes.
