1. Figure Out the Hours

The first thing you need to do is work out what time you can devote to your new business and work out a timetable. You also need to think about childcare – some moms might choose to put their baby in a nursery when they’re working while others may choose to work around their child’s nap times.

2. Do Some Research

It’s a good idea to do some research into your target market to make sure that the people you want to target are interested in the service or product you’re going to provide. It’s also a good idea to find out information about your competition to see if you can find ways of being different from them.

3. Attend a Business Workshop

There are lots of courses available to small business owners that will help guide them and their business in the right direction. Whether you need advice on marketing your product or you need to learn how to create a business plan, there are a number of courses available for you.

4. Create a Business Plan

Next, you need to create a business plan that sets out the objectives and aims of your business. Your plan should clearly show the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.

5. Create a Marketing Plan

Once your business plan is complete you should start thinking about how you’re going to market your product or service. Small businesses may find it useful to note on a calendar what activities they plan on completing each month so that they ensure they complete them.

6. Promote Your Business Online

Once your business idea and marketing plan has been produced you will want to start advertising your business online. Creating social media accounts is a brilliant way to advertise your business. It’s also a good idea to set up a webpage that has information available for your customers about your company. You need to make sure that any information you store on your computer is safe, so using security software is a must. One way of controlling your data to make sure your intellectual property is safe is to use a virtual deal room. Virtual deal rooms provide you with a safe space for file sharing and storage.

7. Stay on Top of Admin

It’s a brilliant idea to start a customer database that stores information about your customers. Having this information will enable you to send out regular offers and newsletters and hopefully increase the amount of repeat business you receive. Remember that any data you store needs to be kept secure. You also need to keep a spreadsheet that shows you any income and expenditure of the business. Keeping on top of admin will save you a lot of time in the long run.

8. Remember the Three P’s

The three P’s you need to follow are:

  • Plan – any new business needs a plan, this includes a business plan and a marketing plan.
  • Persist – it’s harder than you think to start a new business, particularly if you’ve got young children at home, but don’t give in at the first hurdle.
  • Promote – anyone can have a brilliant idea, but if they don’t promote it properly it will probably fail.

Starting a new business can be daunting at first, but remember it is possible and you can succeed. Planning and promotion are key to your success, so make sure you spend time completing both of these things.
