Arkansas woman launches Designs By Studio C for inspiration and all things DIY

Imagine yourself doing something you love, having the ability to do it anywhere, and not ever needing to purchase from a furniture store or hire a contractor ever again. Our next guest proves to you that a woman really can do and be anything she dreams of. If our next Mompreneur Rockstar does not inspire you to start your own business you will at least definitely wish she would move in with you 🙂  Grab your tool belt and read on my friends because we are about to get our hands dirty.

Welcome to Mompreneur Media, Cher-Ann. Please tell us a little bit about yourself:

I am a mom to two teenagers. My son is in college and my daughter is in high school. Both are very creative and frequently participate in some of my projects (mainly because they have no choice!). I worked as a draftsman for a steel fabricator for two years before I decided to venture into furniture design.

How did you get into furniture drafting?

I took a drafting class in high school back in the dark ages when we used a pencil, paper, and a straightedge (known as “board drafting”). I was the only girl in the class and really loved drafting but I was too “cool” to pursue it. I’ve thought about it over the years and when the opportunity arose for me to be able to go back to school, I chose Drafting. It is all done by computer now and I am thrilled to have actually learned to board draft which is a skill some of the younger students didn’t have. I like to build furniture and do home improvement projects so furniture building seemed like a natural fit.

How do you go about getting inspiration and ideas for your new furniture pieces?

I like to scour the web and look at furniture websites for inspiration. I’ve also been known to mentally pick apart furniture in stores, the doctor’s office, or wherever and figure out how I can build it.

Where would you suggest be the starting point for someone who wants to learn furniture drafting?

College! There are several technical schools that offer CAD (computer-aided drafting) training. There are different types of drafting, also, with some of the fields being engineering, structural steel, commercial or residential construction, or furniture design to name a few.

Your furniture pieces have been featured in several places, what was the most exciting?

I’ve created a few furniture projects for PureBond, a division of Columbia Forest Products, in the past and developed a great relationship with them. Several months ago, they contacted me and asked me to create plans and build projects using the PureBond plywood for a major home improvement retailer. I was excited and flattered at the same time! It is even more exciting that I shop at this particular store on a regular basis!

Any future plans for your business?

I want to continue to empower others to tackle building or home improvement projects regardless of the skill level. I feel it is something anyone can do, it just takes a bit of confidence. I would like to eventually get into coaching where I can work one-on-one with someone wanting to learn to build. I think that would be lots of fun!
