New digital technologies are changing many aspects of life. Not only are they transforming how people socialize with each other online, but they’re also changing business too. Entrepreneurs who aren’t focused on the latest digital photography trends could wind up losing out in the design stakes against their competitors.

So what are the biggest trends we’ve seen in digital photography technology in the last year or so?

Digital Tech Comes To Drones

In the past, if you wanted to get a decent aerial shot of whatever you were doing, you had to hire a helicopter and a camera crew for the day, costing thousands of dollars. It’s why we only saw aerial shots in the biggest budget TV series and films. But now, the cost of aerial photography has been slashed thanks to innovations in the drone space. Drones, the little flying quadcopters that used to be child’s play are now one of the most exciting frontiers in photography. Drones, like Lily, can fly up to fifty feet high and capture everything you do on the ground in HD or 4K. What’s more, many drones are equipped with intelligent algorithms, meaning that they are able to follow you around as you do whatever you’re doing. Thanks to in-built GPS, drones can follow you and take a video while you’re surfing, biking or even while you are hiking using trekking poles, all without you having to control them at the same time.

Action Cameras

With the rise of VR headsets, many photographers are getting interested in 360-degree cameras. These cameras are able to capture all the action in every direction and stitch it all together seamlessly so it can be experienced in virtual reality.

Many companies, like Nikon, are vying to produce the best 360 camera, predicting that as virtual reality takes off, so too will the market for virtual reality cameras. Because manufacturers expect 360 cameras to be taken everywhere, many giving them waterproof housing, helping to make them more rugged compared to standard cameras.

As you might expect, companies like GoPro are investing a lot of research dollars into 360 cameras. They expect that, before long, 360 videos will be the media of choice for people wanting to relive their action sports moments.

“Smartphone-ography

Smartphone cameras have come a long way since the early 2000s. But even though resolutions have been doubling every couple of years, digital technology isn’t able to overcome some of their inherent weaknesses, like the fact that they don’t have optical zoom. Now though, a bunch of companies, including Zeiss and Olloclip, are trying to change all that. They’re making camera attachments for smartphones that simply clip on and provide all the functionality of a regular DSLR. The idea is that users will be able to take their photography to the next level and improve their posts to Instagram and Periscope.
