Some artists believe that they only need to do Art and then money, fame, and recognition will follow. That is their first mistake.

Gone are the days that artists suffered with their art pieces in silence. Modern artists need to know how to make themselves marketable in order to earn their keep. Here are some suggestions for up and coming artists who not only want to be known as an artist, but an entrepreneur as well.

5 Major Principles for Artists & Entrepreneur Success
5 Major Principles for Artists & Entrepreneur Success

First, treat your art as a business and not as a passion. Look at it from this point of view for a moment. In order to make money, you need to create a profitable company. Set aside your talent (that’s you) and focus on the business plan. Create a mission, vision, and core values if you have to, since this would be the path you’ll need to follow in order to succeed as an entrepreneur. In a nutshell, plan where to go and develop an action plan.

Second, be a professional. Stereotypes dictate that an artist can be erratic, and easily frustrated. They have volatile tempers and are often given the license to behave however which way they want. This is not what you want to be known for. Not honoring previous engagements for instance, because you feel too emotional, or because you did not like the way your art was criticized is not very professional behaviour. It is unacceptable.

Third, use available technology. Some artists see it as undignified to “peddle” their works of art in such a ubiquitous way. But it is this commonality that may lead to you getting the bigger clients you want. Literally everyone uses the World Wide Web, emphasis on everyone. Companies and individuals who may need your expertise are online right now, looking for you! I cannot over-emphasize this need, but to put it bluntly, you do not have a business if you are not online.

Fourth, do not be afraid to invest in yourself, because you are the main money-maker in this business. If you need professional classes, go and enroll and make the most out of it. Aside from learning a few more skills to enhance what is already there, you may be able to create a network that is beneficial to you. Artists for instance, attend Art Shows Lemon Grove and create important contacts through there.

You also need to invest in making a personal image for yourself. The way you dress, speak, and act will have a huge impact on your career and business.

An investment in business coaching may also be in order. You don’t want to venture into something you might not even understand. Business courses include financial handling, which will be a very good skill to acquire.

And finally, be good to your art. Nurture it, and make sure that you do not abandon the part of yourself where your artistry comes from. Always be inspired in everything you do and never forget that your art is a representation of your inner self and that is always worth sharing to others.
